Seventh-day Adventist church. Seventh-day Adventist Church formed in the mid-19th century following the Millerite movement, with distinctive teachings shaped by Ellen G. White, whom Adventists regard as a prophet. Their most visible distinctive is Saturday (seventh-day) Sabbath observance, but they also emphasize Christ’s imminent return, soul sleep rather than immediate afterlife, and an “investigative judgment” currently underway in heaven. Adventists are known for their health message advocating vegetarianism, abstinence from alcohol and tobacco, and preventive healthcare, operating numerous hospitals and educational institutions worldwide. Their governance combines local congregational elements with broader conference structures. Despite being sometimes viewed as outside mainstream Christianity historically, Adventists hold core Christian doctrines while maintaining their distinctive apocalyptic focus and lifestyle practices.
